Mr.E and Mrs. Darling
MR. E
Before reading this section on Mr. E, please read the news articles and watch the videos listed on the other page.
Assuming you've returned from that page, you already have enough context to understand who the real Mr. E was and why he was written the way he was. He was a real teacher I had when I was in 6th grade. In fact, he was one of the first teachers I (Lily) had when I moved to a new school after the situation with my grandfather. I'm sure you can see how impactful and traumatic that situation turns out to be when put in that perspective.
To give more insight into this man, we need to think about how he is known to constantly tell this story about how he struggled a lot once his mom died. This is something anyone could sympathize with and I truly believe that's why he told the story so often. You can't deny that he's a regular human being who feels things deeply when he's telling a story like that and has lived through what he has. I would like to note that in real life, he often told this story after he had assaulted someone. He'd make someone feel uncomfortable and all of a sudden come in the next day saying he's really thinking about his mom and shedding tears with the entire class. There wasn't a single person who didn't buy into his story and act, even me. However, I only realized that this was a defense mechanism after he had assaulted me. It's sad but true and it's such a disgusting way to manipulate the abuse you dealt with to allow yourself to continue abusing others.
It was clear that my school wasn't the first school because he committed all these heinous acts out in the open. In the play, Lily is grabbed by her waist. Although this did happen in real life, it is not the full extent of how his actions were in a class setting. He'd often grab both of my wrists tightly and hold them like I was handcuffed while continuing a conversation with a group of students. What's most baffling is he didn't think a single student would tell a soul despite what they've been exposed to in almost every class and unfortunately he was right. Students often ignored his actions or were too uncomfortable to say anything about his behavior so they became used to it. It's sad to say, but this allowed him to become much more open and willing to straight-up assault students in the middle of class without a single concern he'd get caught. Of course, by reading the articles and watching the videos, we know how deep the abuse he brought upon these students was. However, not only was it physically abusive, but it was also mentally abusive as well with his constant mind games.
MRS. DARLING
Mrs. Darling is a loving professor who teaches a modern dance class and sees the love blossom between Evan and Lily. Although it's a bit obvious to certain people that she is based on a real professor I had freshman year, I also wanted to include her as a sharp opposite to Mr. E in an educational setting. She's always kind and open, allowing her students to make discoveries. It's not so much about making sure her character completely mirrors Mr. E but in good ways, it's more about how this is what a regular educational environment should be like. The students actually go into a dance circle with her and that allows comfortability and a fun environment that she helped to create. It's just something to consider when she is the only other teacher we see in this play physically interacting with students onstage.
